Sudden Hearing Loss


Sometimes, hearing loss can indicate a potentially serious condition.  If this happens, seek medical care (call 911) if you or someone you are with have sudden hearing loss with any of these serious symptoms:

  • Dizziness
  • Hearing loss upon awakening in the morning
  • Loud popping sound followed by hearing loss
  • Ringing in one or both ears

Even though we do not hear about this happening a lot, it strikes about 5,000 Americans each year. While it is not common, it is often treatable if medical care is received. It usually affects people in their 40s and 50s.  If medical treatment is not sought, only about 50% of the people will recover some or all of their hearing. Immediate treatment increases this number to 85%.  Please pass this information on so that more people know the symptoms and needed action if this happens to them.
